7 Safety Guidelines For The Transport and Logistics Industry During Loading and Unloading

These communication lights are synchronised to a master system that controls the entire operations. 

Communication indicators act as visual aids during crucial steps. Examples of this include trucks entering the driveway, trailers getting locked in, and a process such as loading/unloading starts or ends.

Use Barriers At Entrances and Exits

Barrier gates are helpful in preventing accidents in the warehouse. Warehouse workers face the danger of tripping over elevated sections or entering risk areas where heavy machines are operating. The transport and logistics domain should always focus on implementing barrier gates whenever the use case calls for it. 

Barrier gates can be connected to the master system and can also be synchronised with the communication lights as discussed in the previous point.

Dock Levellers

These are used when the docking area and the trailer are not at the same elevation. Also, during the course of loading and unloading, the heights can change. This is due to the change in the weight of the trailer. Difference in elevation can lead to a risky situation especially if the loading/unloading is done by hand. 

Dock levellers make sure that the entire process is seamless. These can also be connected to the master control panel. Some dock levellers also use hydraulics to work. These are much safer and easier to use.

Train Your Staff

An educated workforce is key to a safe transport and logistics company. Many Sydney transport services make it a point to hire only well-educated and licensed personnel. Loading and unloading should be done by skilled and licensed staff at all costs. A trained individual:

  • Is aware of the risks involved with the job.
  • Knows how to work around the risks.

  • Keeps a safe distance from heavy machinery when manual intervention is not required.

Avoid Clutter And Use Conveyor Belts

A cluttered warehouse or loading/unloading dock is a huge safety risk. It is crucial that the process is properly structured. Warehouses should be planned and should conform to all safety protocols. One of the best ways to avoid cluttering during the loading and transporting process is to use telescopic conveyor belts. Also, implement track guides, speed bumps, and large convex mirrors on corners. These make driving around the docking area much more safe.

Use A Central Control Panel

A central control system should be used to operate the entire warehouse. For example, chocks were earlier used as restraints to stop trucks and trailers from rolling over. Not only are these unsafe, they can also be more costly in the long run. Link restraints along with other operations to a centralised system and witness the efficiency with your own eyes!

Use Weather Safe Equipment And Canopies

Rain and snow are the biggest enemies of any warehouse. Water can creep into the freight and cause millions of dollars worth of damages. Install canopies and cover the entire area with good quality shelters to prevent these kinds of situations. Also, it makes the working environment much more safer and comfortable for the warehouse employees.
