Smart Ways to Deal with Imposter Syndrome

Imposter syndrome is a psychological syndrome that makes you feel that you are not competent enough to do a particular task or do not deserve the success you have. It makes you feel like your accomplishments are just serendipitous luck.

When you start a new thing, whether it is a job, a business, or simply giving a presentation to bigwigs, doubts flood your mind. If you are looking to open a new business and you have stepped down from your current job, you will have outrageous doubts like what if you fail to get it off the ground or what if you fail to make enough money to make ends meet or what if you fail to pay off instant loans for the unemployed.

Such thoughts can make you go haywire. It cannot hinder your success even if you have the potential to make it to the top. Whether you are looking to open a business or applying for a new job, you need to get rid of all negative thoughts that pull you back from diving in. Here is how you can cope with imposter syndrome.

Identify the signs

First off, you should identify the signs of imposter syndrome. If you feel that you have got lucky knowing that you achieved something with persistent hard work or making it harder for you to accept accolades or when you have inevitable fear of failure.

All these thoughts can genuinely make you debilitated. You should pay heed to your diction when you are talking to yourself and when you are talking to others. Try to identify the cause of such thoughts flashing across your mind.

Note that imposter syndrome is not feeling the fear of doing anything that you cannot. It is a somewhat irrational fear of doing something even though you have all skills for it.

Being humble is totally another thing

When you receive accolades for your particular achievement, you can offer your seniors, parents, and mentors the credit. It is just a sign of humility. You are a victim of imposter syndrome when you give credit for your success to someone but do not feel that your hard work and dedication played the primary role in achieving that success.

You have spent years fine-tuning your abilities and skills to make you fit for that role. You should feel normal when years of hard work bring success, but it does not happen with most people because of the feeling of being unworthy.

Stop being perfectionist

One of the significant reasons for being suffered from this syndrome is you seek perfection. People with such syndrome usually set very high standards for themselves. They are committed to doing the best level of work. It is crucial to realise that everyone’s has different capabilities.

Not all can reach the same level. For instance, if you participate in a marathon, one of you will be the winner only. All participants can’t perform equally to hold that position – after all, everyone has different stamina and strategy to compete.

You often compare yourself with someone who is better and more successful than you. You do not need to compare yourself with others. You should understand that keeping up the level you have achieved is also a part of perfection and success. If you are up to the level you were in the past, you have made significant progress, and you should enjoy it.

Say yes to new opportunities dauntlessly

You cannot say yes to even golden opportunities if you have an irrational fear. It is not surprising that people with imposter syndrome turn down career-making opportunities. For instance, if you are thinking to start your own business, you will put it off and continue to do a 9-5 job.

This is because you do not have confidence in running a business. You will have fear like you cannot compete with competitors, how you will target your audience, what if you are caught up in a conspiracy, and so forth.

You keep learning throughout your life. You can come up with opportunities that you are not sure you can do it. Say yes and learn ways how to do it. This approach will be a stepping stone to new things.

If you are a victim of imposter syndrome, you should tackle it as soon as possible. This can block your chances of making progress undoubtedly. First off, you should identify the sign. Try to control the flow of your thoughts.

Suppose this happens because of comparing yourself with others who are in a better position than you. Stop doing it. Compare your current position with the past so you can see how much you have progressed. You should talk to your mentor. They can tell you how you can get rid of this syndrome.
