A parakeet is a small bird, known for its charming bright colors and long tail. Parakeet such as Rose Ringed Parakeet, Eastern Rosella, Monk Parakeet and Budgerigar or budgie birds are among the ideal pet birds to be kept at home. These charming feathery fellows are ideal for your kids and easily befriend with them. Parakeets are mostly talkative birds, active, playful and can be easily trained. However, keeping them in your home is a matter of huge responsibility. 

  • Things To Keep In Mind When You Decide To Have Pet Birds!

Bringing pet birds in your home is a matter of serious commitment and responsibility. If it?s your first experience of having pet birds, here is the checklist for prerequisites:

  • Have proper housing / cage for pet birds
  • Make sure you have time to supervise and take care of your pet birds 
  • Security is must have ? if you already have a cat in home, be very careful. Both dogs and cats are adorable and ideal pet. However, most of the time, cats see the bird as delicious snacks; only in few cases, they get along. 
  • Some of the pet birds are quite talkative, loud or noisy we can say. So, make your family or the neighbors have no issues 
  • If you travel a lot, there must be someone to look after your pet bird, at least once a day to refill water and food containers

  • Taking Care Of Your Pet Birds!

Generally, all the pet birds have similar requirements of food, water, shelter, security and healthcare. Some have certain specific requirements of food, nutrition or housing. However, pets generally have similar requirements and here is how you can fulfill them:

  1. Proper Housing / Cage / Setting Up

When you decide to bring a pet bird home, the first thing is to choose a suitable cage. It must be adequately sized according to the pet bird, with proper ventilation, essential food containers and safe enough for birds. In addition, if you add some swings or toys in it, they will love their home sweet home. 

Then, spread a paper sheet in their cage. It will prevent the contamination of carpets of thee floor with their droppings. Change this sheet daily or maximum after two days. Provide with proper nesting if you plan to breed the pets.

Make sure that the food and water containers are not too small and fixed with some wire. This will prevent spillage of water and you will not have to refill it again and again. 

Last but not the least; the cage should have some toys or swings. Parakeets such as budgies are quite playful. Cockatoos love soft, colorful and shred able toys. So, add some colorful, soft toys.

  1. Provide Proper Food And Water And Fresh Water

Pellet food is good and recommended for budgies. Parakeets generally eat broccoli stems, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery and carrots. Leafy green veggies are great to fulfill the requirements of essential vitamins and minerals. For budgies, you should place a piece of cuttlefish in their cage. Chewing cuttlefish is good for their beaks and also a good source of calcium. Do not feed your pet bird chocolate, ice creams, alcohol, fruit seeds or caffeine. Birds are super sensitive about their food. Always provide them with fresh food and water. 

Keep the water bowl clean and always filled with fresh water. Also, clean the water and food bowl twice a day or at least daily.

  1. Grooming Your Birds 

Birds groom themselves regularly. They shed feathers and grow new ones. However, if you notice that your pet bird is shedding too much feathers, it might be some health issue. Moreover, you will have trim their nails every now and then. Sometimes, birds need to clipping of feathers too. But, that can be very dangerous if done incorrectly. So, be careful or take help from some expert.

  1. Health Care

Birds are really sensitive. They can easily get digestive and respiratory infections. Also, they are prone to contracting parasites, like worms or lice. The greater the number of birds in one cage, the higher is the chances of spreading infection. Therefore, keep an eye on your pets. As soon as you observe some signs such as too much shedding of feather, discharge from nose and eyes, seek medical help. If your pet bird is not eating properly, you should immediately seek medical help.

  1. Travelling / Shifting Places 

Firstly, if you travel a lot, make sure to have someone to look after your pet birds. Secondly, if you are shifting places, you should use a small, covered cage to shift your birds. 

As we mentioned before, having pets is a matter of dedication and responsibility. If you have to travel a lot and there is no one to look after your pets, it?s better not to have them in first place. 

  1. Companionship / Friendship 

Birds also require quality time, friendship and companionship. If you have more than one bird, its good, however, if you have one parakeet, you must spend some quality time with them. Birds are generally chirpy, talkative, friendly and playful. If kept alone and caged, they can get sick out of boredom and loneliness. So, make sure to bond with your pet birds. Furthermore, parakeet such as budgerigars are easy to train to talk a few words even a sentence. That?s is why, pet birds are good for kids and they often bond well.
