You definitely hate seeing roof rats running here and there around your lovely abode. It’s like they are having fun annoying you. These thin and long rodents are also called black rats, but they are actually usually brown in color with blended black specks. Their ears and eyes are big, noses are pointed and tails are flaky, and some people would not want to see them even in pictures.

Looking for and building their havens in higher portions of houses, roof rats bring huge headaches and wallet aches to several homeowners around the world. The problem of roof rat infestation in homes is absolutely taxing and demanding. It ruins houses and makes them less comfortable for dwellers.

Many homeowners with roof rat infestation issues are aware that they do have these at home, but many also are not informed. Well, obviously, the major signifier of roof rat infestation is spotting these pests in and around your home. With that single evidence alone, you must be already doing something to get rid of them.

There is a regretful tendency for homeowners to just let the roof rats be, either because they are lazy to catch and eliminate them, or because they do not know how these rodents can actually bring harm to their building and to their lives.

Being knowledgeable and concerned will help you be alert and secure from further risks that roof rat infestation can bring. Here are 5 ways roof rats can put your house and your family in big danger! Go read and be in the loop!

1 – THEY CAUSE STRUCTURAL DAMAGES THAT CAN IMPAIR AND KILL LIVES.

To people, roof rats’ munching on house areas is a tremendous distress, but to the rodents themselves, it’s simply their lifestyle and their source of strength. Totally opposite to people’s necessity, that’s what makes roof rat infestation an enormous nuisance.

Not every human knows, but roof rats chew on houses’ structures to maintain sharpness of their teeth. They can chomp through wooden materials and framings including doors, windows, stairs, floors, roofs and more. Drywalls and soft concrete are not exempted from their fierce bites as well. Generally, roof rats will just gnaw on and through anything they can destroy to get to any place they want. They always leave marks on their passageways and leave damages on their objects.

Because nibbling on house parts and furniture is the main talent of roof rats, they can and they often wreck house structures. Little by little, they do so, that’s why many homeowners don’t instantly notice the infestation, thus, scratch their heads in the end.

The structural disfigurements, if not attended to, can impair lives and the worst, kill lives. If a beam terribly fails to support the house’s weight and load, there’s a possibility for the house to literally crumble down. In a less shocking scenario, a single house segment can be weakened. Obstructing and falling debris are unsafe.

All these structural damages will be a misery — both losing a house earned the long way and losing lives all can only get once.

2 – THEY MAY LEAD TO FIRE DUE TO BROKEN ELECTRICAL WIRES.

One of the favorite tucks of roof rats are electrical wires. Their teeth are developing and maturing, so chewing on materials like wires is their hobby. What’s more, this activity helps roof rats alleviate pain while their teeth are growing. It’s very upsetting to humans, but it’s part of their nature to not care but just gladly munch on wires in humans’ homes.

Hazard comes in when roof rats’ biting activities lead to fire due to broken electrical wirings. As you know, sparks can happen when active wires get slashed, especially if they get in contact with conductors. The stripped wires inside the cable jackets are safeguarded, yet they are actually powerful literally and figuratively. Since incisions on electrical wires strip off their insulators and protective coverings, the wires become critical. Exposed wires pose threats of electrocution and fire.

This is one of the biggest reasons why dragging the time before responding to roof rat problems at home is a no-no. Broken wires caused by roof rats can make your abode go up in flames, and you won’t even be prepared if you don’t care. Roof rats can squash wires of appliances like televisions, refrigerators, electric fans, washing machines and computers, and when you experience this, you have to immediately work on repairing them, or else, they can lead to greater harm. Furthermore, roof rats can crunch on gas pipes, and this is definitely the fastest and most horrible way for tragic fires to take place.

3 – THEY CONTAMINATE FOOD.

It would be a bit of relief if roof rats just exist to ask for food, however, that’s not how it is.

While roof rats are unwelcomingly lodging in your house, they can contaminate the food that humans eat. This occurs through direct contamination by their urine and droppings or dirtying food preparation spaces and dining areas. Food poisoning is the result. Salmonellosis is the disease that can be conceived if food with roof rat droppings is consumed by humans.

4 – THEY CARRY AND SPREAD DISEASES TO HUMANS.

Related to the previous number, diseases can be acquired by humans through viruses and bacteria that roof rats carry and spread. Besides food and water contamination, transmission happens through fleas, scratches and rat bites.

These injuries inflicted by roof rats can lead to fatal health conditions and even death. Rat-bite fever can be picked up through rat bites when these rodents chase, bite and become aggressive. Aside from fever, nausea, joint pain, muscle pain, headache and rashes are its symptoms. Leptospirosis is a deadly illness issued from contact with infected urine of roof rats. Typhus is communicated through roof rats’ fleas. Hantavirus is determined from direct roof rat bites and even from inhaling dust tainted with their wastes.

5 – THEY INFECT HOUSE PETS TOO.

Humans are not the only victims of roof rats’ infectious disease transmissions. Pets also are. What’s sadder is that some owners don’t immediately identify that their pets are in danger because of roof rats at home, so their pets get ill, suffer and die.

These rodents set worrisome health perils to house pets including toxoplasmosis and trichinosis. The above-mentioned human diseases can be acquired by animals as well. Dogs and cats usually get infected through rat bites, eating rats and consuming water and food defiled with roof rat litters.

If you are aware of roof rat infestation in your house, do something to protect your pets too. They may be smart and trained, but they are not as enlightened as humans. Keep them safe by putting away mouse traps from their favorite pet spots. See to it that they avoid eating rats, especially if they are dogs. Observe your dear furry babies to determine whether or not they are exhibiting unusual behavior and inactivity which you suspect to be involving roof rat infestation. If their health worries you, take them immediately to the veterinarian to prevent further problems. Have them regularly checked up.
