Best neighborhoods in Hong Kong for expats

The thrill of moving to a new environment is easy to understand. But, before you start thinking about how you’re going to arrange furniture and decorate walls, big decisions need to be made. For starters, you need to choose the exact location of your new home. And one of the reasons why Hong Kong is so exciting is its mix of communities. There are plenty of diverse places to choose from if you’re thinking about moving here. Here are some of the best neighborhoods in Hong Kong for expats.

Moving to Hong Kong

Moving is not easy. In order to get everything ready for the big day, you will need to cross off a lot of items from your checklist. And there are many useful tips you can find online that can help you with this. But, the decision on the exact neighborhood takes more research. Check out these neighborhoods and compare them with your preferences. After you pick a couple of them, do further research, and check the average price of properties and other helpful information.

Happy Valley and Jardine’s Lookout

Happy Valley and Jardine’s Lookout are two areas that offer different types of dwelling. Here, you can find luxury houses as well as apartment living options. Being close to the center has made Happy Valley a popular choice among expats. Moreover, plenty of green surfaces is one of the greatest and most attractive features of this neighborhood.

If you go higher up the mountain, you’ll get to Jardine’s Lookout. With a spectacular view over the previously mentioned area, this neighborhood offers a more exclusive type of living. Jardine’s Lookout has its own amenities that residents can use, so this doesn’t have to be a reason to go to the city center.

If you’re moving with your family, this is a neighborhood you should consider. With great international schools nearby, you can be confident that your kids are getting an excellent education. On the other hand, as you might assume, this is definitely not the city’s cheapest area in terms of real estate prices.

Mid-Levels

If you’re a young person who’s all about convenience, Mid-Levels is the right choice. This neighborhood is a stone’s throw from great cafes, restaurants, and supermarkets. With easy access to popular locations such as Soho and Lan Kwai Fong, it’s easy to understand why Mid-Levels is a popular location. But there’s more to it than social life and nightlife scene. With walking distance to public transportation options and good international schools nearby, this is an excellent neighborhood choice for families.

There are more possibilities here for those who like to take up a challenge, as residents here can reach hiking trails going up to the Peak.

As for the housing options, new residents can choose between more recent developments and colonial apartments. After making your choice, all that’s left to do is hire a crew from Relosmart Movers and move to your new home. In no time, you can enjoy everything this vibrant neighborhood offers.

Kowloon Tong

West Kowloon and Kowloon Tong are also popular with expats. One of the reasons for this is access to MTR transport to the city center. Another reason is that Kowloon Tong is a peaceful neighborhood with great international schools and many housing options.

In West Kowloon, you will find a mix of old and new apartment complexes. There are plenty of shopping opportunities with Olympic Station, Festival Walk, and Elements malls. With supermarkets, cinemas, and other amenities nearby, you’ll find that living here is quite convenient.

While outstanding Kadoorie Avenue might seem pricy, there are low-rise apartments that you might be able to afford. There are locals as well as expatriates, so the neighborhood is a real melting pot. However, if you have your eyes on this avenue, you need to be quick. There is considerable interest in new listings, and homes are on the market for a short time only.

Repulse Bay and Stanley

If you love the beach, then these are the best areas for you. However, as there are no public transportation options here, you’re going to need a car to get to the city center. But, that couldn’t stop these areas from becoming popular neighborhoods for expats in Hong Kong.

Comparing these two, Stanley is probably a bit more affordable. However, both of these options offer superb facilities, excellent international schools, restaurants, and shops. But best of all, you can enjoy the beach life you always wanted here.

The Peak

Just south of the Mid-levels, you’ll find this fantastic place. Without a doubt, the Peak is the most scenic and the most affluent area in Hong Kong.

Before, this neighborhood was exclusive to wealthy non-Chinese residents. Today, of course, anyone who’s financially capable of buying a property here can do so. While residents from the past were carried in sedan chairs, nowadays, this region is an excellent choice for hikers, with many hills in the area, including the Peak itself.

The popularity of this region has a lot to do with a breathtaking view. Even the height of the buildings is limited in order not to obstruct the view. The potential downside could be that the views can sometimes be shrouded in fog. Another drawback is that many sightseers enticed by the amazing scenery visit this area at weekends. So it may become a bit crowded.

Housing options are mostly complexes. Each one has plenty of amenities that residents can use. Every morning can be a great one if you have a cafe nearby, and the Victoria Peak loop and the Morning Trails right there to go for a walk.

Choosing one of the neighborhoods in Hong Kong is a start

Choosing your new neighborhood is essential, as the choice will affect your new life in more ways than one. For this reason, the area needs to reflect your vibe and suit your needs. However, remember to look beyond the neighborhood as well. If this will be your first apartment, don’t forget to make sure that your new home has everything you need for the life you know you deserve.
